PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Shadows of War: Prelude to the First Memorial Day provides a realistic experience that brings history alive for young students who are in the midst of studying the Civil War era. They can identify with the young heroes and heroines of the story. My presentation supports the curriculum as the middle grade students study Pennsylvania history, the Civil War and/or the origin of holidays. This presentation is partially biographical because the author spent her childhood in Boalsburg, PA, the town where Memorial Day was born. Students can learn more about how the observance of “Decoration Day” has changed over the years and how it has spread across the nation. This presentation will last 40 minutes plus 10 minutes Q&A per session.
Follow-up workshop sessions are also available. Classroom groups of approximately 25 students will participate in hands-on interactive workshops. They will learn about the vocabulary of the time period and/or compare and contrast the use of words in the 1800s with 21st century language. These workshops will last 50 minutes.
FEES
$100 per session for Centre County, PA or any county adjacent to Centre County ($200 per ½ day)*
$150 per session for counties in Pennsylvania that are not adjacent to Centre County ($300.00 per ½ day)*
$500.00 per day for any state adjacent to Pennsylvania*
Note: A ½ day visit includes two 50-minute presentations/workshop sessions, book signing, plus, if desired, a lunch get-together with a preselected group of students.
*The school pays travel expenses beyond a 50 mile radius of my home in State College, PA. Any miles above 75 will cost $.48. Any miles above 100 may have an additional cost for flight fare, motel and meals.
FREE AUTHOR VISIT: The author will provide a free session to any school in Central Pennsylvania that purchases 30 or more copies of Shadows of War at retail price of $6.99+tax.
STUDENT PREPARATION
Author visits are more meaningful when the students are prepared beforehand. Prior to the visit by the author, students should have read or studied Shadows of War through a Civil War unit, Memorial Day unit or some other related activities. Author visits are also enhanced when students have a concrete keepsake to remind them of their special day with the author. Normally, a flyer is sent home with the students announcing the author visit and providing an opportunity for students to purchase the book. The flyer is returned, with payment, allowing the school to know how many books to order. While no student is required to purchase a book, I do require that the school make my book available to the students for purchase prior to my visit. This should be done in a timely fashion to allow for use of the book before my visit and to facilitate book signing. The order form can be found on this website. I will provide complimentary bookmarks for all students.
Please contact me if you have questions or would like to schedule a visit. Let me work with you to design a variation of my school visit plan that will work for your school. An event scheduling form can be opened below. Upon receipt of a scheduling form, I will mail a contract. A $50.00 deposit should be submitted when the signed contract is returned to the author.
